In Portrait, a head emerges through overlapping marks, stains and sweeps that disrupt the stability of the face. Recognizable features remain, while the graphic matter cuts through them and makes their definition uncertain.
Blacks, grays and open areas build a figure of strong gestural intensity. Avakian approaches portraiture as a presence in process, shaped by layers, erasures and shifts.
