In Black portrait, a black mass dominates the composition, leaving only a few pale openings within it. The figure is held inside this compact field, like a face emerging through broad strokes and heavily saturated areas.
The image achieves great intensity with very few elements. Avakian uses contrast and density to build a frontal, dark and gestural portrait in which graphic matter carries the full presence of the figure.
