Description
In Cinco horas menos, Guade Estienne approaches the intimate scene as an image recovered from unstable memory. A figure appears in a nocturnal interior, seen from above, surrounded by dark greens, black areas and a soft light that blurs the limits of the body. The painting preserves the appearance of a photograph, but moves it into a more uncertain territory, where memory seems to alter the image itself.
The work brings together several central aspects of Estienne’s practice: identity as a shifting space, the vulnerability of portraiture and the fragility of affective images. The blur does not erase the scene; it intensifies it. What is lost in definition returns as atmosphere, distance and suspended time.
