In Ombú, Nicolás García Uriburu transforms the emblematic tree of the Río de la Plata landscape into a monumental, organic, and commanding presence. Its crown unfolds through intense greens, luminous yellows, and reddish accents, pierced by openings that reveal the landscape beyond and turn the tree into an almost architectural structure.
The horizon is organized into bands of blue, ochre, and green, while two smaller trees accompany the central figure and emphasize its scale. The composition combines the observation of landscape with the symbolic language developed by Uriburu, for whom nature served both as a pictorial subject and as a field of environmental reflection.
The ombú occupies a central place within the artist’s iconography. Between 1963 and 1964, Uriburu consolidated his return to figuration through images of trees and ombúes, a motif he would continue to develop within a body of work closely connected to ecology, the American landscape, and the protection of natural environments.
The work is signed “URIBURU” at the lower left. On the reverse, it bears the handwritten inscription “Ombú / Nicolás Uriburu.” It is accompanied by a photographic certificate handwritten and signed by the artist, in which he states: “I certify that the work titled ‘Ombú,’ reproduced on the reverse of this document, is of my authorship.”
